
A safe,
supervised, and nurturing environment
Lighthouse
provides youth a "Safe Harbor." An environment that is drug
and alcohol free, safe from physical and emotional violence, and
encourages healthy behavior. Adult staff members and
volunteers provide youth with supervision and positive role models.
Evening Meal
Lighthouse provides
an evening meal at 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Meals are
nutritious and reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of
participating youth.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Lighthouse is committed to assisting the academic achievement of
youth. Lighthouse provides study hours Monday-Thursday from
2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Study hours provide youth access to quiet
space for studying, computer and internet access, and one-on-one
tutoring by Lighthouse staff members or University volunteers.
For students who drop out of school Lighthouse staff members provide
assistance with re-enrollment or beginning a G.E.D. program.
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Lighthouse provides youth with access to a variety of safe and
positive recreational activities including a pool table, basketball,
computer games, Sony Playstation2, and a variety of
card/board games.
EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS
Lighthouse provides at least one
educational workshop per month addressing relevant and meaningful
topics. Individuals from human service agencies, educational
institutions or local businesses facilitate majority of workshops.
Topics regularly covered include drug/alcohol education and
awareness, career exploration, arts and cultural diversity.
FIELD TRIPS
Lighthouse staff expose youth to educational, recreational, and
employment opportunities through field trips. Field trips
include college tours, speakers, plays, musical performances,
recreational facilities, extra-curricular activities and sporting
events. |
