Truancy Prevention and Intervention Program
Many
sources site and history tells us that truancy is one of the early
warning signs of students headed for potential delinquent activity,
social isolation, or educational failure via suspension,
expulsion, or dropping out.
Youth referred to the Truancy Intervention Program have their attendance
and grades monitored, assessments to identify and address root causes
leading to truancy, as well as provide tutoring and opportunities to
catch up on school work.
Youth in this program are also connected with opportunities for extended
learning such as service learning and a learning academy to continue the
engagement in education during school breaks.
Throughout the semester Lighthouse will serve as an additional layer of
support to help change the young person’s directional course.
This may include wake up phone calls, school visits and home
visits. Lighthouse strongly
believes in the power of working with ones assets and will work to help
youth identify their strengths and build upon them.
Each student will receive incentives for each milestone reached.
Additionally, every young person in the Truancy Intervention
Program will have access to college level tutors.
Meaningful parental/guardian involvement is pivotal to the
success of every young person; therefore the Truancy Intervention
Program will host quarterly family nights at Lighthouse.
These events will be used as an opportunity to celebrate
successes, share resources with families as well as strengthen
connections with the families/support systems of youth involved.
